The hotel was only a ten minute walk from the city centre, with its excellent choices of restaurants, pubs, parks, shops and interesting historical buildings such as the cathedral.
Our room was comfortable and clean, the breakfast was excellent with a very good and varied choice of full English or continental, including lots of different fruits and pastries, and vegan and veggie alternatives.
The hotel staff were all friendly, polite and professional. A special mention for Ryan in the restaurant, who was particularly helpful.
My wife and I loved the swimming pool and spa area which was very clean! We treated ourselves to facials which were both relaxing and rejuvenating...an amazing experience!
We've already booked another stay here in December, for the famous Christmas Market.

Winchester is a delightful little city! This was our first trip and we loved everything about it.. it was busy but not overcrowded, there was a great choice of restaurants, pubs and cafes, and small independent shops as well as the bigger, more well-known stores. We were entertained by a number of different buskers, all playing different instruments (one was a lady playing an Irish harp), and different musical genres. This made for an enjoyable and relaxing atmosphere while we wandered the streets and lanes. I wish we lived much nearer Winchester so we could return more often, but we have already booked another stay in December for the well-known Christmas market, when we plan to visit the cathedral as well - we couldn't fit it in this time!

Winchester is an amazing cathedral town that I visited after...
Winchester is an amazing cathedral town that I visited after a recommendation from a friend. Staying two nights and having three days to explore was a perfect amount of time to experience what the town had to offer and see its charm. I spent the first afternoon walking around the high street and enjoying the Anglo/Saxon and Medieval style architecture and buildings. I had lunch and dinner at the Royal Oak pub (delicious Sunday roast) on the first day. I would recommend buying the pass for the Winchester City Museum, The West Gate Museum and the Great Hall (I was not aware of the pass until I got to the West Gate). A visit to the Cathedral is a must and I would recommend purchasing a ticket for the guided tower tour (small space alert though), incredible views of the town from the roof of the cathedral. St Giles Hill view point is 20 minute walk from the centre and provides a different vantage point for the town. Walking through the Abbey Gardens and the ruins of Wolvesey Castle were free and lovely on a sunny afternoon. The Winchester Bakery had delicious brownies and coffee when you needed a break from sightseeing. The military museums were also informative, I visited the Royal Green Jackets Rifle Museum on my final morning.
Highly recommend visiting this lovely town :)

We have grown to love Hampshire so much as the people there...
We have grown to love Hampshire so much as the people there seem the most lovely wherever we go. We went to the Jane Austin House and I said this to a lovely man who was one of the curators and he said 'that is Hampshire people and that is why we moved here'. Winchester itself is beautiful not just the Cathedral or Great Hall or the Mill but spending an hour or so sitting outside one of the many establishments watching the world (and their dogs - we've never been anywhere where there were so many dogs and we argued which we should get). We both work hard but upon arrival we just completely relaxed. Other recommendations the Bangkok Bistrot restaurant in Jewry Street (we also saw the Grayson Perry Exhibit in the same Road), the Sunday morning antiques and retro and other market - I bought two wonderful things I will cherish, but above all the happiness everyone exuded, we will be back. This trip was short but there is so much to see (and also so many of my favourite shops, more than actually accessible in where I live in Kensington but in Winchester all in the high street - the White Company, Hobbs x 20!)
As you can tell we fell in love with Winchester!!
From the moment we arrived we were treated exceptionally well. Our bags were taken up to our room whilst we went to park in the permitted areas. The room was very spacious and perfect for our needs. The breakfast that was pre-ordered each night was brought to our room at exactly the time requested, piping hot and everything ordered delivered. The location of the hotel to enable exploration of Winchester could not have been better and despite being in a town centre the room we stayed in "Nina Campbell" was extremely peaceful.
Very friendly staff and a great breakfast. Central location makes it ideal for exploring Winchester, only 10 minutes walk to the main high street for shops and restaurants. The Black Hole was good value for money compared to other chain hotels and they stored my bike in a secure location which was important for me. Also liked the way they had incorporated old prison doors in to the design of the rooms. I would highly recommend a stay here....
For a hotel at a motorway service station, this has to be one of the cleanest, smartest, and most comfy I have stayed in! The twin beds were a generous single size and the room was quite simply massive! The bathrooms were spotless and modern with fantastic showers. Complimentary shower gel on the walls was a plus! On a final note, the price, I may have got this at an unusually low rate but for £35 I think this was super value.
From the minute we arrived (during what looked like a busy restaurant service) we were made to feel extremely welcome. They had upgraded our room, which was extremely comfortable, immaculately clean and quiet. Superb facilities, everything you could need. The location is stunning just a 3.5 scenic walk into Winchester. The breakfast the next morning was brought to the room and was absolutely EPIC.
Great location in central Winchester, with lovely view of cathedral from parts of the hotel. Staff very helpful and welcoming, good sized room with excellent selection of breakfast options. We had a lovely overnight stay to visit the Xmas market nearby. We also got parking nearby via the hotel, there was a charge but that is reasonable and expected.
The room itself was absolutely lovely, great bathroom, the service was great and breakfast the next morning was tasty but also in a lovely cosy setting. The hotel itself and courtyard was beautiful yet with character, wish we could have enjoyed that with better weather!
It is very close to the downtown area of Winchester and close to the train station. Five minute walks. Beautifully maintained, and Esme is a superb host. So comfortable. We will definitely us it again for our regular visits to Winchester.
Good Hotel near Winchester. It was a business trip so perfect just for sleep. The Winchester Services have some places to buy food which is convenient if you arrive late. Just 5 minutes from Winchester.
The location near to the centre of Winchester. The garden and the quiet location, no traffic noise. The car parking was very close and convenient. We liked the overall ambiance of the Hotel.
Deluxe room - not cheap but good! Also included a P-space in the hotel-backyard. Charming old-pub-atmosphere, near Winchester Cathedral. Nice dinner and breakfast
Well located hotel, easy reach of Winchester centre. The room was comfortable, a good size and nicely decorated. Good value compared to other hotels in the area.
location between Southampton, Winchester, Portsmouth - you can discover those towns, if you have a car
good plenty breakfasts, nearby zoo, pool at the hotel
