Biwako Hanakaido 4 stars

Ogoto Onsen, Otsu

Japanese-style rooms have a tatami (woven-straw) floor and traditional futon bedding, while Western rooms come with beds and a sofa. All rooms all soundproof and air-conditioned, and fitted with a flat-screen TV, a fridge and an attached bathroom. Service very good. Everything was explained to us in English (as we don't speak Japanese). And very detailed. Dinner and breakfast were really good..They took the effort to serve us different menus as we stayed 2 nights. Very organised.

Honmachi Juku 2 stars

Hikone

Located in Hikone, within less than 1 km of Hikone Castle and 7.2 km of Maibara Station, Honmachi Juku provides accommodation with a garden and free WiFi as well as free private parking for guests who drive. This 2-star ryokan offers a shared lounge. The ryokan features family rooms. The host Natsuhara-san really went above and beyond for me, he is very kind. The cleaning ladies who come in the morning are also very kind and we did our best to communicate through the language barrier. Overall I had a great time! It's very close to Hikone Castle and in the historical town area so it's easy to see the attractions.

Biwako Ryokusuitei 4 stars

Ogoto Onsen, Otsu

The air-conditioned rooms come with Japanese Yukata robes, a fridge and a seating area with low tables and cushions. Guests can choose to stay in rooms with Western-style beds or in rooms with Japanese futon bedding and tatami (woven-straw) floors. Guests can watch international programmes on a flat-screen TV (BBC World, Phoenix InfoNews Channel, TVBS and YTN). The en suite bathroom comes with a hairdryer and slippers. Really loved the dinner and breakfast options. Nightly happy hour with free ice cream and snacks was a nice touch for the guest:) The daily biscuits and top up of hot and cold water in our room was awesome. Everything about the room was great (had the private onsen). Only issue was the shower had some flies so it’s awkward to shower. Staff were extremely courteous. Location was great. Although a bit far from the station to walk the hotel shuttle is able to take you back and forth on request. It’s right opposite the tourism park where you can get great souvenirs. All in all will recommend this place and very satisfied.

Tobaya Ryokan 1 stars

Hikone

The Japanese-style rooms at Ryokan Tobaya feature futon bedding on a tatami (woven-straw) floor. Facilities for making green tea are included, and bathrooms and toilets are shared. Rooms have a traditional decor with shoji paper screens and floor cushions. Beautiful establishment! Gives an old traditional Japanese vibe, still very familiar. Our room was huge, surrounded by Japanese style gardens. Even the kaiseki cusine was good.

Yumotokan 4 stars

Ogoto Onsen, Otsu

The Japanese-style rooms have tatami (woven-straw) flooring with modern furnishings and futon bedding. Each room features a private bathroom with a bathtub made of Cypress wood, filled with hot water from the local hot spring. What’s not to like… we had the best room in the ryokan, super spacious room, had a huge bathroom, shower and a private open air onsen. We had a living room and a bedroom, the space we had was probably bigger than our apartment back home! Dinner and breakfast was beautifully presented, I literally was so relaxed I lost myself there. Wish I booked it for more than one night!

Ebisusou 2 stars

Takashima

The ryokan features a flat-screen TV. Featuring free private parking, this 2-star ryokan also features free WiFi.

Guests at the ryokan will be able to enjoy activities in and around Takashima, like fishing. The place is a little bit odd yes, but it’s a wonderful example of a traditional Japanese hospitality (even if the building doesn’t look traditional… but 70s) the hot bath was one of the best I ever had in Japan and the food was incredible. And I paid only 8250 yen for a half course stay (1 person). And the owner did his best to explain everything (with a digital language translator).
