Launceston is a relaxing town with plenty of well preserved early Australian colonial era buildings which gives it a nice old feel like Ballarat or inner Sydney.
In comparison,
Melbourne has largely replaced its 1850's gold rush architecture and slower pace of life from the 1800's with hideous steel and glass towers and grid lock traffic.
Launceston makes a good base for before and after completing the challenging Overland Track hike in Alpine Tasmania. It is a pleasant place to walk around for half a day.
We found some places to eat
with acceptable/ affordable versions of food from Singapore and other
East Asian restaurants( albeit tailored to the largely white Anglo local population's palates ).
You won't get an authentic Japanese Soba Noodles meal !!.So trust me on this one, because I know.
In Launceston on weekdays trekkers can easily obtain necessary outdoor gear supplies , such as: attire; freeze dried meals ;stove fuel and spirit burners( The latter two items are banned on airlines) for multi day independent bushwalking and hiking in Alpine Tasmania .
The airport is a 30 minute taxi ride from the town centre.

Being a city person, Launceston was a lot quieter than expected. There aren't many shops/restaurants around but enough.
If you are into nature, hiking and camping, then Launceston and its surroundings is the perfect goldmine. We loved Cradle Mountain and the endless hikes it offered.
There are many quaint little coastal towns to explore too up north.

Friendly young barman on a Monday evening.
Highly recommend for a Launceston visit.
The buffet breakfast was fantastic. The bed was very comfortable. The hotel itself is a beautiful space, not too far from most amenities. A little bit far from the bus stop as I came by bus from Devonport, but I don't expect most people will be taking the bus to this hotel.
The hotel and itsgrounds were quaint and attractive, the view was lovely and the abience was excellent. It is well located within walking distance of Launceston's main areas. The fridge was well equiped as was the room. The hallways and fixtures were attractive.
Great location as we were flying out from Launceston Airport the next day, only a 15 minute drive. Just loved the history of the Auldington Hotel and was close enough to walk to all dining options. Check in was excellent and free parking on site a bonus.
Sleek and modern hotel in the heart of Launceston. Beautiful room. Good lighting. Great shower area in bathroom. Laundry room in very good and clean condition. We got the last parking spot on the premises when we arrived at 4 pm on a Monday.
This is great hotel to stay in Launceston. Remodeled rooms and bath that are spacious. The bed was comfortable. The sofa was a bit less so. Quiet room. Comes with a nice continental breakfast which is ample. Host was super attentive.
Loved everything about our stay. The comfort, ambience and communication with staff was excellent, only wished we could stay longer. Highly recommend this beautiful place to anyone wanting a perfect airbnb experience in Launceston.
Wonderful stylish 2 bed 2 bath apartment. Great facilities & location. Good value for money. Very clean. Loved the concept of some of cost going to charity. Would definitely stay again and recommend to others visiting Launceston.
Clean and quiet room in a convenient location. I checked in twice (one week apart) after hours and the hotel manager gave clear information about how to access the keys. I will stay here again the next time I come to Launceston.
Stayed there before and it was as good as before. Hotel well located in CBD of Launceston. Good cafes and restaurants with walking distance. Ample off street parking if you have car. Good buffet breakfast available.
The staff were absolutely wonderful, couldn't get any better - helpful, happy, positive. The hotel was so close to the Lavender estate and other locations so that was fab.
