The city is quite warm to the rest of the country (not sure how warm it would have been in the southern part of the country)
Not very many speaks English but it’s good to experience the country side of Taiwan.
It was too difficult to understand the transportation system as there was nothing in English. Booking public transportation to Alishan was a nightmare but a lovely lady who works in the station helped us to get the tickets from the Family Mart vending machine.
There are plenty of options to eat and there is plenty of value for money options than Taipei City. It’s pretty clean but noticed loads of homeless citizens. The city is improving and I think it is worth visiting it and probably people will because of Alishan National Park.

There are hidden gems in this city that you need to explore. Do your homework before you come then you will find this city very interesting, like i did. Only set back is the frequency of buses. However it was compensated by thr cheap and efficient taxi.
My favourite places Hinoki Village & Old Prison.
I ate at Wenhua Road Nite Market especially recommends Smartfish (Lin Chong Min Shop).

The 'hot spots' - HInoki Village, old prison, Chaiyi Park, etc. - are pleasant enough, but nothing extraordinary. The Tile Museum, however, is the most unique and interesting touristic place in my opinion.

Some pretty areas, but nothing too special.
Some pretty areas, but nothing too special. Very dense, bad traffic and packed streets for such a small town, unpleasant and difficult to get around. No rental bikes at all. Unhelpful tourism desk at the train station send me to places that had already closed and didn't have updated bus times.
Hinoki Village is very pretty and pleasant, and the nearby Jail is an interesting historical site but has no English at all. The Fine Arts museum is very beautiful and pleasant but didn't have much to see. Annoying and difficult to get anywhere due to lack of rental bikes. Annoying, sparse schedule of buses and trains to Alishan made this the only city in Taiwan where I really, really felt the need for private transportation.
Compared to other small towns in Taiwan, there wasn't that much to see and the density was worse than average, with a ton of traffic even on side streets that made exploration unpleasant.

Less bustling than the other cities in Taiwan.
Less bustling than the other cities in Taiwan. The night market here had some of the best food we had had all trip (douhua omg!). Travelling from here to Fenqihu (to go to Alishan) was easy and stress free.
The people here we're very helpful and polite, seeing that we were a little lost.

Commonly underestimated as the mere starting point for the Alishan Forest Rail express - Chiayi itself is a very friendly town with amazing fruits, nice local market vendors and pretty temples and parks to explore. Just grab a map at the tourist information when you arrive at the train station, the maps provided give you some tips for exploring the city. Would totally recommend spending a day there before heading to Alishan, you won't regret it!
Very good customer service. Very old building. The room looks just like this picture. It was extremely clean. It had towels and coffee and toothbrush and soap already in the room so that was well thought out. It seems like an old dorm room or hotel room. Mattress was not terrible. The sheets and comforter were very clean as was the rest of the room! I'm normally in a hostel to save money but coming back into town at the last minute this was all I could get. Very helpful staff at getting into the building.
The hotel is pretty near to the Chiayi Train Station so location is good. However, it seems a tad far if you hv to lug a big bag but walking (without a big bag) takes less than 5 minutes.
The room is big, we can open a L and a M-sized luggage bag fully so that's good. The bed is huge and comfortable.
Customer service is good and cheerful. We were allowed to leave our luggage for 1 night while we stayed overnight at Alishan.
Breakfast is not bad, with local taiwanese food.
The price is right, it's only about $80 a night.. less expensive than any 1 star hotel in a touristy city in U.S. it's simple and newish & sooo clean ...staff is nice & very very helpful. There's even laundry machines in the basement ..slippers & robes r provided .. Flat screen .. sitting area on mats .. bathrooms r like new.. no safe in the room, large beautiful lobby
The price was ok, the staff was very friendly and helpful by willing to help me make a call to other cities in Taiwan. The location of the hotel is about 700m from Chiayi Train Station and can be accessible by foot if you are willing to walk slowly.
About 300m away there is a Carrefour supermarket as well as the Wenhua Street Night Market is about 500 m away.
Every time I go on a business trip, I will choose to stay in this hotel. It is close to the train station, and there are many merchants and convenience stores. The bedding in the hotel is very comfortable. Parking in the parking lot next to the hotel can also be used to discount part of the parking fee
Location was within walkable distance to many tourist attractions near Chiayi city (e.g. 30 mins walk to Hinoki village). We also had a free upgrade to a Deluxe Double room. The room was really clean, neat and new. All the facilities and equipment were also pretty new/well-maintained.
Located in the back part of Chiayi, where the bus station is situated. So it is very convenient for us. The hotel offers very good facilities. The room and bed is very big. The breakfast selection is great. The staff are very helpful and offered excellent service during our stay.
The hotel is very centrally located. Only few minutes walk from Chiayi Train Station. The room was spotlessly clean and comfortable. Most of all, the front desk staff was most helpful for helping us arranging a long distance taxi and return items I left behind.
The services provided by all the receptionists were exemplary, and the location of the hotel was spot on. It's about a 10-minute walk to the train station to Chiayi Alishan Forest Train station, and within walking distance to the night market too.
We stayed here for 2 nights with 1 night away in Alishan. We could leave our bags at the hotel with no issue. Staff is really kind and helpful. Location is great just 2 min walk from train and bus station to Alishan. Breakfast is great too.
The kids room was a great addition to this (appealingly) new and clean hotel! The rooms were very comfortable, location within 5 min walk from the Alishan Forest Railway and lots of restaurants and cafes around. Staff was very helpful.
Convenient location (very close to train station), luggage storage available, large room, deep tub, and comfortable bedding. The amount of noise was reasonable enough that I slept well, even though my room faced the street.
Minutes walk from Train station. a great transit hotel for travelers. Did not try the capsules, but looks very comfortable. Extreme comfortable stay for me. Excellent staff service to guide foreign traveler.
We like the hotel to be clean, spacious, comfy and value for money. There are also self help washing machines and dryers and we managed to wash our clothes in the middle of the trip.
The hotel was very nice and clean. It had a great ac unit and a great view of the city. Staff were all very helpful and the breakfast was good. Definitely would stay here again.
