We arrived at Panglao airport and looked for a tricycle to take us to our hotel. Our driver offered to take us on tours with his tricycle so we made arrangements with him. Day 1: country side tour (loboc river cruise, chocolate hills, tarsiers, butterfly garden). Day 2: he connected us with a group to go island hopping with (dolfin watching, snorkeling, virgin island). Day 3: Panglao island tour (we only chose to go to two places - the cave and the bee farm). We noticed that not a lot of people went round to these tourist spots using tricycles like we did; almost everyone went with vans. We just opted for the tricycle because it was cheaper, and not being a group meant we had more freedom to decide how much time we wanted to spend at each place.
Panglao has everything to offer - ease of access just 15 minutes from airport and you are on Alona beach. You have several beaches to choose from if quiet is what you need and be away from the action of Alona. There are also so many nature/adventure / cultural and historical tours to choose from that is a day tour away. Tricycles and private cars/vans are readily available. Lots of great food choices as well. Go for freshly grilled seafood!!
Panglao is an island in the north Bohol Sea, located in the Central Visayas region of the Visayas island group, in the south-central Philippines. Panglao Island is Bohol's best beach destination. It is situated southwest of Bohol and south of Cebu.
Panglao is a small island easy to navigate. We did not join any tours but utilized the local tub-tuks that took us around. It felt safe,, welcoming, people are very friendly. The beaches are so beautiful.
I am of the opinion that all the tour attractions touted by the operators at Panglao are not value for money. Sales pitch promises that deliver very little. You do not get what to see or enjoy what you paid for. You paid for private tour and wake up at 4 am to go watch dolphins but ended up seeing a few dozens of other boats scrambling in the same area but no dolphins. You paid to scuba dive to watch turtle but ended up watching many other scuba divers. At the end of tour, you felt cheated and misled by the hard sales pitch. The night entertainment along Alona Beach all ceases by 9pm. The massages we had were generally mediocre. The hailed tricycle can be a ripped off if you do not bother to ask the fare before boarding. Unfortunately, Panglao is not a place for me to take home with great memories. I get better bang for the bucks at Phuket or Bali.
Panglao Island is quite idyllic. The beaches are clean and the water clear and inviting. The restaurants are diverse especially the ones closer to the main roads and away from the beach. The food is a mix of several types of cuisine. Shopping was also a wonderful experience. The other side of this beach area, where the Bellevue Hotel and the Bohol Beach Club feels more like an exclusive resort and quite attractive. Prices are a bit high esp hotel rooms. The boat tour was ok but there were too many boats in one spot that any chance of seeing turtles and exotic fishes was totally diminished.
