We had a great trip and for us 3 days was just right. We visited Pompeii, hiked Vesuvius, caught a ferry for lunch in Provida, and the Metro to the football stadium. There is loads more to do if you stay longer. The city was not expensive to eat out, food of course exceptional and people really friendly. It felt like old Italy more than other places we've been. Less English spoken, more authentic, very busy during the day (insane traffic), not so much at night. We walked mainly, the Metro is also cheap and easy to use.
A city full of history, culture and kind people. The Churches are beautiful, most if the buildings are amazing and Restaurants serve good food (yet not that diversified as you might expect.) Unfortunately, Naples is not that safe or clean. Trash is almost everywhere, even though trash cans exist in all parts of the city. Old clothes, cigarettes and cans are everywhere on the sidewalks and streets, except some parts of the Historical centre which are very clean. Stealing is something normal for many and unfortunately the police is not that responsive to the tourists’ complains about stolen things. I have many friend whose phones, AirPods and different devices were stolen. If you pay good attention to your personal objects, nothing bad will happen. Also, the public transport (except the Metro and Train) is barely usable. Buses come rarely in their stations and most of the time are crowded. We have waited for more than 2h for a bus near the Piazza del Plebiscito — in the very centre of Naples. So please pay attention to this aspect also in choosing to visit Napoli. Naples is worth a visit if you want to see the real beauty of the Neapolitan culture — the beautiful language, grest culture and amazing foods. For sure (with a good dose of attention), Naples is worth a visit.
There is so much to do in and around Naples. Pompeii, Vesuvius, Herculaneum, Pozzuoli, Capri, Royal Palace, Archaeological Museum, Castle Sant'Elmo, Certosa San Martino, shops. Transport system is great and inexpensive. Some people seem to think it's a bit scary but it absolutely isn't. Everyone mega-friendly.
Naples is dirty, full of graffiti, and did not feel overly safe. We only stayed one night, as had to catch a flight out the next morning. We were wrapping up our trip to Italy. Naples is not a destination city. I suggest spending as little time, as possible, there.
Only stayed here one night as part of a multi location family trip - myself, husband and daughters (age 17 and 12). Visited spaccanapoli - thoroughly enjoyed it. Naples had so much more to offer than I could fit in 1-day. Wished stay had been longer. Only downside was I found crossing the roads stressful.
Disappointed in some historical sights and felt a little "ripped off". The Palace of Capodimonte was only open on the top floor with only religious art on display. The first floor however was closed and was what we had gone to see. We were not told this when we paid admission and had been charged the full admission costs as though the whole museum had been open. The main art gallery the Zevallos Palace Art Gallery was small and the caravaggio (their main exhibit) was on loan elsewhere. The main Archaeological museum had their coin and jewel galleries closed, yet again no reduction in admission fees. Pompeii also had areas closed including the colosseum, where it looked they putting in seating for a concert. We would not return to Naples and thought it was not a patch on Genoa (where we visited the year before) for history and art. Naples was also very scruffy, graffiti everywhere, piles of rubbish on the streets and the smell of urine on several streets in the historical quarter. Many of the streets were missing cobbles and the whole city had a run down no longer cared for vibe. Scooters are a menace driving round at ridiculous speeds, driving on pavements and coming out of side streets etc., without notice. As with other cities mothers on mobile phones while kids climbed on art works and kicked footballs around, even in the Palazzoe Reale and main square area. There were also illegal street sellers selling copies of designer goods all over the city.
