As a Big Island resident, I think Kona is over rated and overpriced for what it is. I think it looks like a strip mine with some beaches. Ali'i drive shops has many vacancies. I think other parts of the island have more to offer in beauty, scenery and temperature which is why I don't live in Kona.Guest review byLupien - 10.0
I LOVE Hilo!!! It still holds "The Essence of Hawaii."
I LOVE Hilo!!! It still holds "The Essence of Hawaii." It is not overrun with tall modern buildings, and "Tacky Tourist Attractions." It maintains an Old Hawaii Charm. You're not overwhelmed with street performers and aggressive sales people trying to pull you into their cosmetics stores. Yet there are still some homeless people there which is not good. However, I feel very safe in Hilo. There are nearby beautiful gardens and great beaches! Hilo is surrounded by so much natural beauty. There are some great restaurants there as well. I really like all of them, and I make sure to have at least one dinner at Hilo Bay Cafe. I also always make sure to visit the Imiloa Astronomy Center by UH Hilo. It is an excellent place to learn about the history & culture of Hawaii. And their planetarium has amazing presentations!Guest review byGayleUnited States - 8.0
We loved the location and how close we were to the beach!
We loved the location and how close we were to the beach! Lots of walking paths. Very quiet around the area, but the people above us were stomping across the floor at all hours of the night and early morning. The pool needs some bug control as we had flies on us non-stop and bites on us from the bugs. The host was very accommodating and gave us extra toiletries and even provided box fans which was really nice! The king bed was very comfortable. We would stay here again.Guest review byROBINUnited States - 10.0

The house is full of mold 3 of the 4 visitor got sick while we were there, and I'm still sick four days later. All of our clothes and suitcases smell like mildew. We had to wash all of our clothes when we got home (even the one's that we didn't wear). Had to put our suitcases outside to air them out when we returned, but it didn't help much. I believe we deserve a full refund! We would also like compensation for our ruined suitcases. Please call me.Guest review byReeves - 8.0

Location is a beautiful escape, I could stare at the ocean all day. The house is very nice, extremely clean. I really liked my room. I like the clothing optional idea. It’s a drive to grocery store, gas, restaurants, I really enjoyed the Thai restaurant in town, but again a drive away.Guest review byStephenUnited States - 8.0

Keaau is an authentic neighborhood on Hawai'i Island vs. a manicured resort. You will get a feel for what it is like to live in Hawai'i, amid the beautiful nature. It is not super close to swimmable beaches, however there is a waterfront park in the neighborhood where you can see the surf pounding against the lava rocks. There is also a local farmer's market nearby. Hilo town is about 11 miles away and has good shopping and some restaurants. The volcano is about a half hour drive away and definitely worth visiting.Guest review byColleenUnited States - 8.0

Captain Cook is a spread-out sort of a place so it's difficult to characterise. There is an excellent pizza place there and a couple of other restaurants plus a supermarket and gas station. You can get down to the coast, but it's a steep walk. The coastline down there is beautiful.Guest review byRickJSUnited Kingdom - 10.0
We loved our stay.
We loved our stay. The ocean and coastal line is magnificent. Lots of marine life and tide pools to explore. Sea Mountain condo hotel was great. It was fully equipped with everything we needed to live there. There are grocery stores in Pahala and Na'alehu -- so be prepared to stock up and/or do the drive.Guest review byBenteUnited States - 10.0
The beach was amazing.
The beach was amazing. Especially in the morning before it gets crowded. But because it is quite lengthy even when it gets crowded you have plenty of space for quiet relaxed time. Quality of water excellent. Has some nice snorkel in the rocky sides. Probably the sunsets are stunning- unfortunately cloudy weather during my stay.Guest review byIOANNISUnited States - 8.0
We stayed a week in a house in area.
We stayed a week in a house in area. Ate at Grill on beach drove to volcanoes, and Historic National Parks. Black sands beach was great as turtles swam by. Took Manta Rey night snorkel and day snorkels. Coffee tour was hot and humid but informative.Guest review byReginaUnited States
