- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.4Superb - What previous guests thought, 282 reviewsCommunications and guidance was excellent, and in English, the staff were amazing and super friendly. We were in a studio but upon arrival we were upgraded to the house as it was available, and they said because it has more room for you. House was spotless, modern and immaculately kept, we had one of the two bedrooms available. The house was called Ti Manel and had a lovely view over the rest of the guest houses and the hill. We went for a 3 hour hike straight out of the front door along a rabble road and through the hills. The views from the top of the hills was amazing, and as it was spring, flowers were in bloom and the air was lovely scented and fresh. Each morning we were provided fresh bread rolls hanging at the door. We used the typical Portuguese grill to cook steaks. It felt very idyllic! An exceptional place to stay. Seia is only a 9 minute drive away for shopping and dining or strolling and enjoying an icecream.Guest review byLeonAustralia
- From US$107.08 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 330 reviewsThis rural hotel looks like it has recently been totally renovated, so it adds an old palace charm to high standard modern amenities, like a design passage way between the main building/reception area and the building where the rooms are. The gardens are beautiful and very well kept - there is a rose garden, a hortensia's garden, a wall-garden and the gardens around the open air swimming pool. There is also a tennis court by the swimming pool, all very nicely done. The situation is very peaceful and quiet, overlooking the mountains and farms. The rooms are very spacious and some of them have a nice terrace with access to the gardens. The breakfast was really good, all with freshly made products from the region - cheese, ham, marmelade - and home made bread. We stayed happily for two nights and could have stayed longer to unwind! Bonus: the Mondego river walkways are a half hour drive away, a nice walking trail of 16kms.Guest review byClaudiaNetherlands
- From US$325.33 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 9.6Exceptional - What previous guests thought, 343 reviewsThe location (quiet and surrounded by plenty of untouched nature), the design and architecture of the hotel, the breathtaking view from our (panoramic) room, the cleanliness, the amenities, complimentary toiletries and snacks, the warmth of the staff. The food was mind-blowing (both at breakfast and dinner). The complimentary welcome drinks and nibbles and the daily activities available were a really nice touch. The overall attention to detail and thoughtfulness that goes into it all is seriously outstanding. Frankly THE best hotel we've ever stayed at. We have not stopped recommending it to friends and family since.Guest review byVeronicaUnited Kingdom
- From US$102.89 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.9Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 1,640 reviewsBreakfasts were great -- many choices, good food, and a wonderful experience being on the top floor of the hotel with great views. The interior decor was pleasant and spacious. The hotel was conveniently located to the center of Guarda with the churches and castle. We especially loved being able to take the fast elevators upstairs for chef-quality dinners. There was good parking in the basement garage.Guest review byThomasUnited States

Guarda was our first entry point to Portugal as we drove to the Algarve. from Spain. Check in was very laid back and easy and we were quickly settled in our apartment at Hotel Santos, a family run establishment. The old and young staff provided a level of unintrusive efficient service that some major hotel groups should learn. This is the highest city in Portugal rising above 1200 metres in the Estrella mountains. The view from our window was breathtaking looking out across the valleys below and inhaling the clean cool evening mountain air. We were surprised to find a really vibrant population of around 39000 inhabitants, many shops, cafes and restaurants in such a small community. Guarda today is an important hub for the region where many roads and railway lines meet, providing excellent transport links in every direction. Guarda as its name suggests was a defense against the Moors in days gone by and has many wonderful sights that are well preserved to this day. We found a busy square very close to the hotel almost devoid of tourists where locals sat for hours just chatting and enjoying the restaurants in the summer heat, ensuring that their way of life wasn't taken over by loud music and the chaos of high density tourism. A small part of the square had become a mini water park where children played with hoses and an improvised slide. We joined the people watching the setting sun while enjoying a light snack and the mandatory beer to accompany it. A very comfortable night and excellent breakfast prepared us for the drive to the Algarve. You cant beat this lifestyle for sheer beauty and relaxation.Guest review byTimothyJersey - 6.0

We left a day early because the town is quite remote and we were keen to move on. We are on a month long tour of Portugal though so a day didn’t make much difference to us. There isn’t much to do in Manteigas itself. Having said that, the guide in the local tourist office is exceptionally helpful and very knowledgeable about the region. There are some beautiful views as you drive in and out of the town.Guest review bySuzy - 10.0

Celorico da Beira is a beautiful, quiet village with many hiking trails. The area is extremely safe as is most all of Portugal and the locals are very friendly to those visiting. Highly recommend this area if you like hiking, want to be away from the stress and busyness of life, and just want to get away for some peace and quiet with beautiful scenery around you.Guest review byQuinnPortugal - 8.0
Unhais da Serra is a very small town.
Unhais da Serra is a very small town. It has one outstanding restaurant - As Thermas and another couple of ones that are good options as well. A couple of local shops that carry the delicious cheeses, charcuterie and liquors made in Serra da Estrela. We always stop to replenish or stock - we prefer the tiny mini-market, but the fancier shop has sweatshirts, slippers and interesting items as well. It's the perfect get-away for rest and relaxation. We park the car at the H2otel and do walking to everywhere we need to go over the weekend. I'd say a 3-4 night stay is ideal.Guest review byjennie0901Portugal - 10.0

Loriga is a gorgeous town, not unlike many in the area of the Serra da Estrela. What sets it apart is a great river beach (praia fluvial); its closeness to the Parque da Serra da Estrela, an easy 20-minute drive; and it's less busy than other more popular towns. Driving through Loriga's streets can be a daunting experience if you are not used to very narrow streets and steep slopes. If you plan on staying try to find lodging close to the main road.Guest review byFidelPortugal - 10.0

Guarda is a city where history and hospitality intertwine...
Guarda is a city where history and hospitality intertwine beneath the vast Portuguese sky. From the moment of arrival, the warmth and kindness of its people shine, making each encounter memorable. The city’s compact layout is perfect for wandering, though the hills reward every step with breathtaking views. The cathedral stands at Guarda’s heart, with its towers offering sweeping vistas over red rooftops and winding alleys. Nearby, the castle and medieval tower are silent keepers of centuries gone by, each providing a unique perspective of the land below. If time permitted, the wild peaks of Serra da Estrela would beckon nature lovers and hikers with their rugged beauty and scenic trails—a promise for another day. Evenings bring culinary delight: Simple.Guarda offers outstanding Italian cuisine, while charming cafes invite guests to linger over coffee and pastries. Shops and markets bustle with life, from tempting kitchen stores to fragrant flowers and perfectly ripe fruit. The ancient, winding streets—paved with time-worn stones—invite exploration, each turn revealing new surprises like parks, a chocolatier, and inviting squares. Our visit felt all too brief. As we left, Guarda remained with us—a city to savor, to wander, and to remember fondly for its gentle magic and the warmth of its people.Guest review byPhyllis
