- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 64 reviewsWe stayed here as a base for Koyasan, as we couldn’t get accommodation for five up on the mountain. We had a hire car. The road from Koyasan down here is extremely narrow and windy - it will take you half an hour, and you will want to be a confident driver on narrow mountain roads. We lived in fear that we would meet an oncoming vehicle in one of the insanely narrow stretches, but never did, thankfully. They have a restaurant on site which we recommend you use - there is nowhere else to eat within a large distance, and almost all the restaurants in Koyasan are closed in the evening. We had breakfast there which was fantastic - though a little too traditionally Japanese for our fussy teenage son’s taste. The accommodation is in a lovely quiet valley - it’s a beautiful spot. Our cabin was spacious and had good cooking facilities (though we didn’t use them). The receptionist spoke enough English to get us booked in without recourse to Google Translate. There was no wifi in our cabin - but amazingly enough there was phone reception, despite being in a deep valley in the middle of nowhere. There may be Wifi in reception but we didn’t explore this. We used the private onsen in our cabin - basically a very large stone bath that you fill from hot and cold taps to whatever temperature you want. Very pleasant. The hotel seems to offer a shuttle service to Koyasan - we didn’t use it but overheard other guests who had used it.Guest review byPaulAustralia
- From US$216.72 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.0Very good - What previous guests thought, 309 reviewsIf you are one who likes unparalleled sea views + hot spring baths, give this place a try! The bathroom and room decorations are a little old-fashioned and have a sense of age, but overall, everything was functional and very clean, plus room amenities were good. If the weather is good, do take a soak in the open-air footbath on the first floor of the hotel and enjoy the views while at it. They also provide yukata in the room, which can be used around the hotel as well as to bring to the bath. I highly recommend trying their outdoor bath, which has amazing views of the Pacific Ocean. Hotel staff are all very friendly and helpful, and even though some couldn't speak good English, they tried their very best to help us with any queries we had. much appreciated. Would return to stay next time!Guest review byTimothySingapore
- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.1Superb - What previous guests thought, 168 reviewsVery nice hotel with their own onsen onsite (public and private), which I enjoyed a lot. You can visit both throughout the day (even in the middle of the night). I would definitely recommend to get dinner and breakfast, there was an interesting variety of local and traditional dishes, which were very delicious. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. It's a great hotel I wish I would have spend more than a night in. It exceeded my expectations and I hope I will be back one day!Guest review byManuelPhilippines
- From US$286.95 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.4Very good - What previous guests thought, 1,828 reviewsWe loved the onsens looking out at the ocean both in the day and the night. Its a very special experience to be warm in the onsen and then watch the oceans powerful waves. We had a beautiful view of the ocean from our room and watched the sunrise . It was also near Nachi falls which is very beautiful. Its a busy hotel but the staff were still incredibly helpful. Thankyou-We will remember this place forever!Guest review bykalpanaUnited Kingdom

The scenic mountains near the city offers stunning sunset views. The Sakura were in full bloom. There are several parks around the city, and the impressive Wakayama castle. The hotel (Candeo Hotels Nankai) is great value - fantastic river views, rooftop onsen that you can enjoy the sunset. And right at the Wakayama Station. Good dining options around the hotel too.Guest review byKwokSingapore - 10.0

We are Americans so we had really little knowledge of Shirahama as a resort city. It was at the tail end of a 3 week tour of Japan and was very restful. Fortunately, we were there after Golden Week and before the main tourist season, so it was quiet and relaxing. We had fun over two nights at a local Turkish restaurant, Blue Bar. We'd recommend it. Also, the beach seemed quite nice although we had one day or rain so we didn't hang out there. While this wouldn't be a regular stop for Americans, I think it is worthwhile and an easy train ride to the airport in Osaka.Guest review byAndrew - 10.0

I came here for the history and the experience of staying in a monastery/pilgrim lodging, but I left with much more than that, as all the people I met here were wonderful, from fellow travelers to local cafe owners. One word of advice would be to take your time exploring Oku no In cemetery, as it's worth a good long contemplative walk.Guest review byDimitraJapan - 10.0

Hongu, Watarase, Kawayu & the surrounding area is hands down one of THE almighty best in Japan — and Japan has lots of amazing places. it's very easy to spend 3 days or more based out of this area & then driving around to amazing waterfalls, ravines, hot springs, cultural spots, mountain vistas, abandoned elementary school, etc. etc. unbeaten japan can take you there so do not hesitate to reach out.Guest review bylawrence of osakaJapan - 10.0

I spent one night in Kii-Katsuura after walking the Kumano Koda Daimon-Zaka section up to the Nachisan shrine and waterfall. It is a four hour train ride from Osaka but we’ll worth it to see this beautiful area in Japan. Just to warn you, the iconic red pagoda near the waterfall is currently being restored and is covered in tarpaulin until early next year. Katsuura is a sleepy fishing and onsen town. Visit the fishery on the port at 7am to see the daily tuna auction. A great experience is bathing in the cave onsen at Hotel Urashima on an Island five minutes by ferry from Katsuura.Guest review byAnonymousAustralia - 8.0

Shingu is a small coastal town with few hills which is a wonderful to find after 10 days hiking on the mountainous Kumano Kodo pilgrimage walks. One of the 3 Great Shrines is here and very accessible whether walking or driving. Getting to and from Shingu is very easy with the train station and bus station being together in the center of town. It is a good base for reaching the other 2 Great Shrines of the Kumano Kodo at Hongu and Nachisan. There are a number of good eateries in the town but one of the joys was just wandering down laneways and discovering little gems not listed in the usual guides.Guest review byJimAustralia - 10.0

This is a very peaceful little town on the southeast coast of Kii Peninsula. The residents and store clerks are mostly senior citizens but they are polite and pleasant to meet. It’s the gateway to the Nashi area and the famous Kumano Kodo historical trail. You can also rent a bike at the Information Center next to the JR Kii Katsuura Station to quickly circle around town.Guest review byKuangYuTaiwan - 8.0

Wakayama has a wonderful castle and museum that was sparsely attended. It was a nice change to have the place to yourself so you could take your time at the exhibits. We chose to come here as the city was close to Kansai Airport for our return flight. We did not explore the regional trails which I believe are wonderful. If only visiting the city, a stay of 2 days is sufficient.Guest review byBlatchfordAustralia
