Our trip to Nikko was nothing short of magical.
Our trip to Nikko was nothing short of magical. The town is surrounded by some of the most beautiful forests and breathtaking waterfalls I’ve ever seen. Every corner feels like stepping into a postcard—lush, serene, and full of natural wonder. The town itself has such charm, with its cozy streets, warm hospitality, and a peaceful atmosphere that makes it easy to slow down and simply enjoy the moment. We stayed for three nights, which gave us time to explore, but we truly wish we had stayed longer. We liked the room it was quite spacious. It was clean and the bed was comfortable. The hotel was an easy bus ride from the main station and there were many restaurants nearby. Take note of the carpark if driving. The carpark is a multi storey block behind the hotel. Only available from level 3 onwards. We parked at level 4 and fprtunately there was a lift that brought us to level 3, which is the street level leading to hotel. Nice location to visit for max two days, touristic but not too over-crowded and people in general very friendly. Some of the Onsen are amazing - if you like it - and the ski resort (if open since top part closes fast with some wind and snow) is small and somewhat outdated, but still nice for 1-2 days. Nasu is well known and loved by Japanese people.
Nasu is well known and loved by Japanese people. The Emperor has a summer house here as it tends to be cooler in summer. It’s little known by westerners and therefore is not catered to westerners. Parts of Nasu are very beautiful and other parts are set up for families - eg the zoo and the Dairy farm. We walked to the Togoshu Shrine; make sure you're prepared for uphill walks and a lot of stairs. The Main Street leading to the shrine was amazing. A ton of food vendors and restaurants. It is a beautfiul town high up in the moutains.
It is a beautfiul town high up in the moutains. The toursit part of town centres around the hot spring and the way it is lit these days makes it particularly beautiful at night. There are temples and parks to visit and some quaint little shops. You can stand and watch soba noodles being made by hand and then enjoy them for a very reasonable price. Walk up the hill and around the none touristy parts of town. there are some great family run restaurants serving delicous food at prices the locals pay. Apart from the soba place which is in the toursity part of twon, restaurants in that area are pretty expensive. It gets cold, quite cold, down to -5c in January during my stay. Be aware that getting in and out of the town is via limited timetabled train and bus. Unless you are there for the skiing, get in early in the morning, stay 1 night and get out the next afternoon.Guest review byjonathanAustralia
