We stayed in the old town which is a mass of tiny streets - all very colourful - all very different. We are still not sure if we explored them all! Restaurants were mainly family run and the joy of eating out was getting to know the staff, the family. Food was good wherever we went, and our only slight disappointment was that the menus all seemed very similar. Mykonos is a great island that only exist for tourists. All the workers go home during the winter and the island is desolate. But during the warmer months, it comes alive. Our seventh trip to Rhodes Town over thirty years. With each visit, the crowds have been worse. Enormous cruise ships are the root of the problem. The hotels and bars on the beach side of the new town are still as ghastly as ever, and there are more of them. The new town's most interesting features are the Turkish cemetery, the Ottoman bazaar and the fascist architecture from the Italian era (1912-43). The town was buzzing and full of life. Some excellent restaurants (peskesi a stand out) Beaches were stunning especially when blessed with perfect summer weather. Fira is a great town full of varied shops and fantastic places to eat. It can be expensive so plan a little extra money for food though! There are plenty of things to do an see in the town and the public transport to other areas of the island are quite frequent and cheap. Staying in the center i.e. old town was all accomplished on foot. Taxi's available right outside the hotel. ALL very convenient. Loved Paxos on Flying Dolphin. Our ferry was cancelled due to severe weather. Naxos Chora offer free cancellation up to 3pm on the day of arrival. I notified the hotel before 3pm on the arrival day that we could not arrive on the island & wished to cancel that night. Amazing Resort and extensive facilities on site. Staff are amazing. Also one of the best mani/pedi I ever had at the salon. Resort is about 30 minutes from airport, and would say for a 5* Europe resort, this lives up to expectation, but don't compare to a 5* Caribbean or Mexico Resort, so bear that in mind. We stayed at the Ocean view room which had spectacular views. The Rocky beach was just fantastic with the lounges and beds, and considering how busy this resort is, never noticed it and never felt overcrowded, and you never had to reserve benches or lounges by the beach or pool, there was more than enough to go round and even more spare. A la Carte restaurants that were amazing and my favourites are Umi (Sushi), Azzuro (Italian), Thalassa for breakfast & lunch, Poseidon. A real let down of the restaurants was Nami, only delicious items were the Starters. Avoid the strip along the beach where it’s quite gritty and scruffy, we got the bus most days to other beaches as we got a bit sick of the busyness of the town. A city can be beautiful and full of wonderful things to see and do, but its always the people that make your stay. i expected Tourist Fatigue by the time we went in September.
