Windermere town centre is small but has plenty of cafes and restaurants to meet all food lovers types. There are a good selection of shops for gifts etc. and all are within a few hundred yards and not too far from the railway station or buses to travel to other parts of the lakes. It is also a 10 to 15 minute walk to Bowness (downhill) which is also the place to hop on to the lake boats or alternative dining or shopping and the Beatrix Potter experience. My pictures are of the lake side in BownessGuest review byNigelUnited Kingdom - 10.0

I do like Ambleside area and Log House isn't in the town centre which I prefer, the town centre is almost a mile from Log House but you can get a bus into the centre if needed. Also you can get the boat from Waterhead Pier which is just a short walk from Log House and goes to Bowness and also Lakeside and you can get buses/trains to Keswick and Kendal and lots of other places around the lakes. And Hayes Garden Centre is just minutes away and is one of the largest in the area, lots to see and do and eat in there. As I was there just for one night I just took my own filled rolls and milk and biscuits but if had been a longer stay would have either gone to Hayes Garden Centre for a meal or over the road to Bassa and there are plenty eating places in the area. I like Bowness too and have stayed there for many years and plenty cafes, restaurants and fish and chip shop and ice cream shops and souvenir shops too.Guest review byChristineUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Kendal is a great location between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. It is large enough to have a lot of choices of restaurants, grocery and shopping options. The Castle is a lovely walk, it's beautiful, and has lots of walking paths and green spaces for dogs as well as people. We loved the markets and the local towns around, as well.Guest review bySusanUnited States - 8.0

I've been visiting Grasmere for many years. It's a beautiful village but is is sad too see so many premises vacant and some of the old buildings derelict. some of the Hotels have closed as well.Guest review byWilliamUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Has a nice period 'feel'.
Has a nice period 'feel'. Lots of one-off shops and very few national chain stores. Quite hilly, which could be challenging in slippery conditions. The promenade provides an excellent, uncluttered walk along the marshy coastline, particularly in good weather. Lots of great, family-run restaurants and 'eating pubs'. Provides a civilised alternative to the popular holiday resorts.Guest review byJohnUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The mountain is extremely picturesque and well worth the technical hike to the top. Glenridding is a lovely village & I could easily have stayed a couple of nights enjoying the pubs and hospitality whilst exploring the beautiful area & swimming in the tranquil, but cols water!Guest review byBannie19United Kingdom - 8.0

Small beautiful market town within a superb country setting back dropped by the lake district fells. Traditional market place with live market on Thursdays. Full range of restaurants from A La Carte to take aways - Indian is particularly good! Easy to walk about the town and local area with river Lune just out of the town - Devils Bridge a very popular tourist attraction.Guest review byMikeUnited Kingdom - 10.0

A small village with more than enough eating venues, accommodation, shops. Every venue us professionally managed, locals friendly and appreciate visitors. These people know how yo present their village to the best of their ability. Sits on the edge of Ullswater and has the ferry terminal for you to take advantage of and sail the length of the lake.Guest review byGlenisUnited Kingdom
