If you are into hiking and hill walking this is a good place to be ! The views are splendid and the street market is a hive of activity. The Pencil Museum is well worth a visit as are some of the historic mining sites. Boat trips on Derwent Water are available as a round trip or a Ferry service. Away from the main roads some roads are quite narrow and walkers and drivers need to be careful and considerate.Guest review byThomasUnited Kingdom - 10.0
I do like Ambleside area and Log House isn't in the town...
I do like Ambleside area and Log House isn't in the town centre which I prefer, the town centre is almost a mile from Log House but you can get a bus into the centre if needed. Also you can get the boat from Waterhead Pier which is just a short walk from Log House and goes to Bowness and also Lakeside and you can get buses/trains to Keswick and Kendal and lots of other places around the lakes. And Hayes Garden Centre is just minutes away and is one of the largest in the area, lots to see and do and eat in there. As I was there just for one night I just took my own filled rolls and milk and biscuits but if had been a longer stay would have either gone to Hayes Garden Centre for a meal or over the road to Bassa and there are plenty eating places in the area. I like Bowness too and have stayed there for many years and plenty cafes, restaurants and fish and chip shop and ice cream shops and souvenir shops too.Guest review byChristineUnited Kingdom - 8.0

I go there to meet up with old school friends so I know the area and where to visit. Furness Abbey, Dock Museum and Walney Island Nature Reserve are well worth visiting. Ulverston is a lovely small town and not far away.Guest review byValerieUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Cockermouth is a lovely town and makes it easy to reach other places at the north of the Lake District. Places to visit Maryport, Silloth, Keswick., Whinlatter. Cockermouth itself has lovely walk along the river and play areas for children.Guest review byGabrielle - 10.0
We stayed 2 nights with our dog.
We stayed 2 nights with our dog. We were going to go by train but there was a problem at one of the lines and had to use the bus, so we decided to drive. St Bees is lovely for a walk and the beach. The weather can change suddenly but heat will remain. It is accessible to other areas by train or car. We went through to Whitehaven for a few hours which was lovelyGuest review bySueUnited Kingdom - 10.0

We were visiting family amd found it to be a charming town with many independent shops. Lots of places to eat and drink. Our visit was at the beginning of September so probably not as busy as during the summer months and it is a distance to the main lakes. Probably ideal for hikers and those looking for less commercial areas. Parking was an issue even though there are a lot of car parks.Guest review byEileenUnited Kingdom - 10.0
A quaint little Georgian town on the edge of the Lake...
A quaint little Georgian town on the edge of the Lake District, with a scenic harbour. The Rum Story & Jefferson's Shop is a must see and The Beacon Museum is definitely worth a visit. You can walk on the pier all the way to the end, be careful in bad weather, the block floor is not even. Lots of nice buildings around, many have seen better days but worth a walk around the town. The courtyard and gardens at the little church on Lowther Street are very scenic. The waters in the Queens Dock are an orange colour from the iron leaking in, certainly makes it unique and memorable (investigations into resolving it are underway). The Former Wellington Pit site gives a great view over the town. Lots of local pubs around, I must give a special mention to The Vagabond bar / restaurant, probably the best pizzas we've ever tasted anywhere.Guest review byGregoryUnited Kingdom - 10.0

The mountain is extremely picturesque and well worth the technical hike to the top. Glenridding is a lovely village & I could easily have stayed a couple of nights enjoying the pubs and hospitality whilst exploring the beautiful area & swimming in the tranquil, but cols water!Guest review byBannie19United Kingdom - 10.0
