FAQs about hotels in Lake District
Poetic Artistry at its Best
The inspiration behind many a poet, the serene Lake District has majestic peaks and glorious lakes that form the UK’s largest and most visited national park.
A particular favourite of Wordsworth, Windermere is England’s longest lake and her waters are still plied by historic boats. With a range of luxury Lake District hotels and a Beatrix Potter Museum, the town is connected by cable-operated car ferry to a spot close to Near Sawrey where Miss Potter once lived. Near the lake’s northern tip is popular Ambleside, home of the Stock Ghyll Force waterfall.
A road goes north from here past picturesque Grasmere and Thirlmere lake to Keswick. Set by Derwent Water, this pretty town is overlooked by Skiddaw, while Scafell Pike – England’s highest mountain – is to its south-west. Bassenthwaite lake is north-west, and Glenridding to the east is on the shores of the popular sailing spot of Ullswater, watched over by Helvellyn.
In the Southern Lakes, Coniston is a small village by a lake offering watersports. South-west is the port town of Barrow-in-Furness, and also by the sea is Grange-over-Sands with its long promenade. Kendal is known for its tasty mint cake and has a museum of Lakeland life, as well as a good range of Lake District hotels with pools on Booking.com.

It was a nice view of the lake from the lake suite. The room with a private bathtub was the best choice for relaxing and couple celebrations. Also, the spa and swimming were available and cosy. At this time of year (December), the town was so beautiful and everywhere was decorated for Christmas. It was a dreamy trip.🎄✨️Guest review byFarokhiazizkandiIran

The area is stunningly beautiful and the people are so friendly and chatty. It was a real pleasure to be there. I'd recommend a day tour just so you see everything. Driving around the hills was hair-raising, another reason to take a tour. The town Bowness was a bit tacky and touristy.Guest review byFlooshAustralia - 8.0

If you are into hiking and hill walking this is a good place to be ! The views are splendid and the street market is a hive of activity. The Pencil Museum is well worth a visit as are some of the historic mining sites. Boat trips on Derwent Water are available as a round trip or a Ferry service. Away from the main roads some roads are quite narrow and walkers and drivers need to be careful and considerate.Guest review byThomasUnited Kingdom - 10.0

I do like Ambleside area and Log House isn't in the town centre which I prefer, the town centre is almost a mile from Log House but you can get a bus into the centre if needed. Also you can get the boat from Waterhead Pier which is just a short walk from Log House and goes to Bowness and also Lakeside and you can get buses/trains to Keswick and Kendal and lots of other places around the lakes. And Hayes Garden Centre is just minutes away and is one of the largest in the area, lots to see and do and eat in there. As I was there just for one night I just took my own filled rolls and milk and biscuits but if had been a longer stay would have either gone to Hayes Garden Centre for a meal or over the road to Bassa and there are plenty eating places in the area. I like Bowness too and have stayed there for many years and plenty cafes, restaurants and fish and chip shop and ice cream shops and souvenir shops too.Guest review byChristineUnited Kingdom - 10.0
I feel sorry for the town council.
I feel sorry for the town council. Penrith is very much a "gateway to the Lake District" so it gets very busy, especially in the middle of summer and coping with demands for accessibility and parking in a very old town is always going to be a problem. It really is a lovely town but this country has an aging population and I suggest that Penrith council really needs to think hard about the needs of it's aging residents and disabled visitors. There's a VERY sparse amount of parking dedicated to disabled travellers; the pavements are uneven and many are not wide enough to cope with a wheelchair. We stayed at and ate at Foundry 34 and the nearby chippie. Foundry 34 was trying to appeal to a younger crowd and although the food was fine, I felt it was expensive. The chippie was excellent but I was surprised how early it closed.Guest review byPaulUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Kendal is a great location between the Lake District and the Yorkshire Dales. It is large enough to have a lot of choices of restaurants, grocery and shopping options. The Castle is a lovely walk, it's beautiful, and has lots of walking paths and green spaces for dogs as well as people. We loved the markets and the local towns around, as well.Guest review bySusanUnited States - 8.0
