If you are into hiking and hill walking this is a good place...
If you are into hiking and hill walking this is a good place to be ! The views are splendid and the street market is a hive of activity. The Pencil Museum is well worth a visit as are some of the historic mining sites. Boat trips on Derwent Water are available as a round trip or a Ferry service. Away from the main roads some roads are quite narrow and walkers and drivers need to be careful and considerate.Guest review byThomasUnited Kingdom - 8.0

A great compact city, good for a weekend break but also great as a base to explore this beautiful area. Train journeys along the Carlisle /Settle route, the Cumbrian coast route, over into Scotland and to Leeds Newcastle etc all easy.Guest review byMichaelUnited Kingdom - 10.0
I feel sorry for the town council.
I feel sorry for the town council. Penrith is very much a "gateway to the Lake District" so it gets very busy, especially in the middle of summer and coping with demands for accessibility and parking in a very old town is always going to be a problem. It really is a lovely town but this country has an aging population and I suggest that Penrith council really needs to think hard about the needs of it's aging residents and disabled visitors. There's a VERY sparse amount of parking dedicated to disabled travellers; the pavements are uneven and many are not wide enough to cope with a wheelchair. We stayed at and ate at Foundry 34 and the nearby chippie. Foundry 34 was trying to appeal to a younger crowd and although the food was fine, I felt it was expensive. The chippie was excellent but I was surprised how early it closed.Guest review byPaulUnited Kingdom - 10.0
We stayed 2 nights with our dog.
We stayed 2 nights with our dog. We were going to go by train but there was a problem at one of the lines and had to use the bus, so we decided to drive. St Bees is lovely for a walk and the beach. The weather can change suddenly but heat will remain. It is accessible to other areas by train or car. We went through to Whitehaven for a few hours which was lovelyGuest review bySueUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Cockermouth is a lovely town and makes it easy to reach other places at the north of the Lake District. Places to visit Maryport, Silloth, Keswick., Whinlatter. Cockermouth itself has lovely walk along the river and play areas for children.Guest review byGabrielle - 10.0
A quaint little Georgian town on the edge of the Lake...
A quaint little Georgian town on the edge of the Lake District, with a scenic harbour. The Rum Story & Jefferson's Shop is a must see and The Beacon Museum is definitely worth a visit. You can walk on the pier all the way to the end, be careful in bad weather, the block floor is not even. Lots of nice buildings around, many have seen better days but worth a walk around the town. The courtyard and gardens at the little church on Lowther Street are very scenic. The waters in the Queens Dock are an orange colour from the iron leaking in, certainly makes it unique and memorable (investigations into resolving it are underway). The Former Wellington Pit site gives a great view over the town. Lots of local pubs around, I must give a special mention to The Vagabond bar / restaurant, probably the best pizzas we've ever tasted anywhere.Guest review byGregoryUnited Kingdom - 4.0

Calder House Hotel looked to have great views out to sea with a fabulous beach. We experienced a tired run down establishment with a ‘couldn’t be bothered’ staff attitude. Dismissive and inattentive, we would never go back.Guest review byWendyUnited Kingdom - 8.0
Fine town with easy access to beautiful lake district.
Fine town with easy access to beautiful lake district. Has all you need in close proximity. Lots of dodgy driving in town. Stay frosty! If you're exploring the lakes this is great access and after adventure comforts.Guest review byGaryUnited Kingdom - 10.0

Great little place if you want to stay a night after a big walk very cozy and comfortable the weather wasn’t amazing when we were there but added to the cosiness, of the little Shepherds hut hearing the rain outside had a great time. Would stay again.Guest review byNinaUnited Kingdom
