- Scored out of 10, guest rating 9.3Superb - What previous guests thought, 173 reviewsAdam went out of his way to accommodate me and it was a very last minute booking. I arrived with a pair of the most disgusting shoes I had ever experienced, and he found me a small place out of the way where I could clean them and let them dry. When I booked a bike rental from him, he sat down with me to figure out what I wanted to see on the bike ride and helped me work out the best path and gave me a good map to use. And because the theater under the hotel is loud and can be hear through the floor, I was given free entrance to see the movie I would have been hearing anyway. The decor was lovely and the outside spaces even better. The position near the center of town but so close to the beach and the trail that goes all around the island was perfect too. I will come back and bring a group of friends to enjoy this lovely little island! Also, a great bonus for a Danish hotel...cold fresh drinking water was readily available and free (a rarity in Denmark, often you have to pay for drinking water there). Bathrooms are shared, but were quite lovely. They were well ventilated and had lots of space, were kept clean, and were well supplied with towels, nice toilet paper, shampoo, conditioner, and bodywash. I didn't feel like I was lacking anything. Breakfast was offsite, but Adam made arrangements with a nearby hotel that has a nice little Danish style breakfast buffet and they were able to meet my needs with my different dietary issues. They even baked me a fresh gluten free bun every morning and always offered to bake me a second one if I wanted it.Guest review byChristiansenCanada

This town didn't even make the Lonely Planet guidebook, but was so heartily recommended by Rick Steves that we decided to give it a go. The trek was a little bit complicated, but well worth it. One of the most beautiful places we've ever been to, and very family friendly.Guest review byDorothyNorway - 10.0
Easy to get to from Svendborg on the ferry.
Easy to get to from Svendborg on the ferry. We got the train from Copenhagen to Svendborg - on time and very straightforward. Beautiful island - in early September - very quiet and peaceful. Lovely walks from the town of Ærøskøbing and we hired great bikes from the guy at Andelen. Lovely countryside cycle up to Soby - very small - had lunch at the harbour. Cycle paths are great and easy to follow. Restaurant Mumm had amazing food and the cafe Den Gamle was our favourite. Just need to plan ahead a bit as some of the other eateries close very early or don't open on Sunday at all.Guest review byAnonymousUnited Kingdom - 10.0

I was had a plan to go see another area of Denmark after this and changed my mind and booked another stay on this island to extend my trip here before returning to København and then home to Canada. There are things to do, and plenty of time and space to not have things to do, too. Lovely patios with amazing simple but tasty food. And the architecture and lovely little details on these homes and business store fronts are just charming. The movie theater is so adorable, and worth a visit. They play movies in their original language (often English) with Danish subtitles. This village of Ærøskøbing is right out of a modern twisted fairy tale adventure and the proximity to the beach is always a plus. As an English speaker, I'm not having issues communicating, although I am trying to practice some Danish speaking when I have the vocabulary. As someone not traveling by car, the free bus that runs on e an hour has been a blessing. I will have to come back here again to this charming place. It's a little slice of heaven without the extreme summer temperatures.Guest review byChristiansen
