Bathing Beaches, Fishing Villages and University Towns
Stretching from Ahlbeck in the East to Flensburg in the West, the German Baltic Sea region is a popular destination renowned for its sandy beaches, fishing villages and seaports. From university towns through to seaside spas, it is rich in attractions and things to do.
To the east of the region, there is the Usedom Island, a popular spot with wide beaches and plenty of little spa towns, where the mighty of this world used to come in the old days. Germany’s largest island, Rügen, is just north-west from Usedom and features stunning chalk cliffs and varied natural life.
The German Baltic Sea region offers an abundance of bathing beaches and natural reserves, with Jasmund National Park and Western Pomerania Lagoon National Area, just off Zingst. For a taste of a more cosmopolitan atmosphere, try visiting the cities of Kiel, Lubeck and Rostock.
All 3 of them offer some major attractions, from the Warnemünde suburb in Rostock and Medieval architecture of Lubeck to the magnificent port of Kiel, where you can attend the world’s largest sailing event, the Kieler Woche.
All along the coast of the German Baltic Sea, Booking.com offers a wide variety of accommodation including 5-star luxury hotels to friendly guest houses and comfortable apartments.

- From US$181.17 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.4Very good - What previous guests thought, 4,157 reviewsI have lived in many, many hotels during my career, but this one kind of beats them all. Being a lifelong sailor I just love to wake up with a free horizon and the sun in my face. My God I did here. Panorama view of Travemünde harbor with one ferry after another padding the window. Clear sunshine after an amazing sunrise!. The room, was just perfect - kind of stylish 1960s feel but perfect quality almost everywhere (Yes, this is an older hotel, but the magic factor removes the little imperfections in an instant!), large balcony and a bed that had a very good matrass. Its actually a little hard to find words to describe this perfect arctitecture in the perfect spot for this non-perfect person for a perfect moment one sunny morning. I loved this place and the room. And to add to that, the receptionist when I checked out was incredibly kind and nice.Guest review byMorganNorway
- From US$178.30 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 8.7Fabulous - What previous guests thought, 5,152 reviewsOur stay at the Lindner Resort was simply fantastic! The view from our window overlooking the private harbor was breathtaking, and the small sandy beach, just a five-minute walk away, added to the charm. All the facilities were well maintained, and the staff were always available whenever we needed them. Even in December, the pool and spa facilities were fully operational. The dining experience was truly remarkable, with every meal exceeding our expectations. We felt truly cherished and pampered during our stay at the Lindner, and we cannot recommend this wonderful resort highly enough.Guest review byJanCzech Republic
- From US$120.35 per nightScored out of 10, guest rating 7.6Good - What previous guests thought, 8,241 reviewsThe hotel is situated in 100-150 meters from seaside and rooms are very cosy and comfortable for families with small kids (under 3 years too). Clean apartments with a balcony, small kitchen with all the necessary appliances and dishes - I this is the best decision to such a kind of travellers like me and my kid. aAnd the pool, für groß und klein, is the best I’ve ever seen. Thanks to IFA Rügen Team for our short but very cool weekend 😉.Guest review byDianaUkraine

On a wet Sunday morning in Kiel, the maritime museum on the harbourside was a welcome find. A survey of the city's history from fishing to 19th century yachting regattas, and of course the Naval heritage. Good English translations . Friendly staff.Guest review byRobertUnited Kingdom - 10.0

We didn't know much about the East/West German divide so we were nervous about visiting Rostock. However, it was a pleasant, clean, safe town. We walked everywhere. There were nice parks, a wonderful museum and the St Mary's cathedral (first mentioned in 1232) had an astronomical clock that was a feat of engineering and upon striking 12 noon a procession of small wooden figures rotated around the top. We were impressed with the history of the place. The museum had a display about WWII and it was only in German, however we were able to scan large paragraphs of the display to the phone and download a German translation pack to be able to read it. We ate in several little establishments. We always got correct change back from our bills, unlike other places in Europe where you have to be really cautious with your money. I even tried the local Rostock beer!Guest review byHollyUnited States - 8.0

The town is very beautiful - nature, architecture, the beach. It's just exceptional, so many places to enjoy! Restaurants are very expensive and the food is either mediocre or really bad. If you really like good food, I'd recommend purchasing products in supermarket and cook at home. Little fish shops with smoked fish is the best food this place has to offer in my opinion.Guest review byAnastasiiaGermany - 10.0

Flensburg is a hidden gem, especially for Americans. We were told many times that they don't see many Americans in Flensburg, and for us we liked that. The people are very friendly and welcoming. We love the German and minority Danish populations. The shop owners and people we met were always friendly.Guest review byJon - 10.0

Charming and relaxing beach destination within easy reach of Hamburg. The weather happened to be nice during my stay, but it looks like it would still be an enjoyable destination if the weather wasn’t so sunny or warm. Local people were friendly and welcoming, and I learned interesting things about the region. There are a variety of places to eat, catering to higher end fine dining as well as more humble restaurants. I had a beautiful meal on the deck at Restaurant Rendezvous, as well as a delicious casual meal from the little takeaway huts along the marina. Cafe Ahoi coffee is a decent coffee option, and the bakery Bäckerei Seßelberg Niendorfwas also very good. Gift shop Snabbelsnuut was great with unique and affordable good quality items locally sourced with friendly helpful service, and Lambert Studio has a great selection of lovely homewares, with friendly and knowledgeable customer service.Guest review byCeciliaGermany - 10.0

The island of Rügen is easily accessible by car and can easily be explored for two days with e-bike and steam locomotive. Peenemünde is also a good option. Around Stralsund, you can easily take several e-bike tours, for example, to Aussichtsturm Barhöft.Guest review byjvstrnNetherlands - 8.0
This is an old town in former east Germany.
This is an old town in former east Germany. It was a key port on the Hanseatic League. The Hanseatic League,[a] commonly called The Hansa, was a medieval commercial and defensive network of merchant guilds and market towns in Central and Northern Europe. Growing from Lübeck and a few other North German towns in the late 12th century, the League expanded between the 13th and 15th centuries and ultimately encompassed nearly 200 settlements across eight modern-day countries, ranging from what is now Estonia in the northeast to the Netherlands in the west, and extended inland as far south as Cologne, and Kraków, Poland. If you're interested in history this is a place to go.Guest review byDavidGermany - 8.0
