Breakfast is amazing, you get a basket of breads and croissants plus a lot of other options, including local apple juice and jam. The restaurant serves fantastic food in the evening, although it is a bit on the expensive side. Perfect service at the restaurant. The hotel has a nice swimming pool and a jacuzzy, and the suite features a jacuzzi too. Charlerois not an obvious tourist destination, as it really is a struggling city. But the upper town with the art deco town hall and the main church on an octagonal square has the feel of slightly surrealist film set. One can have a nice stroll through city, exploring its different layers of time and the life of the inhabitants with their very mixed heritage. A very decent destination for a weekend in its own right, it can also serve as a base for things like battlefield exploration (Waterloo, the WW1 Western Front, some of Marlborough's campaigns). If you choose to make it a base for car trips, remember to set your SatNav to "avoid motorways" - it's beautiful countryside if you stick to the smaller roads. I detected no 'edge' to the place at all, no bad behaviour, no vagrants or beggars. This matters since it's a lovely place to explore entirely on foot. A little gem of Ardennes with little streets peppered with fancy bars, restaurants and shops. Good both for a one-day trip and for a longer stay. Nice nature around, and a paradise for kayaking.
