Amazing historical village that seems undiscovered so far.... but for how long? Well run tourist friendly place with so much to offer - culinary, birding, rural life, history, friendly locals, hiking and outdoors. Loved the Wakkerstroom Hotel, excellent birding and history - great for groups of friends to enjoy.

A very peaceful, friendly place surrounded by beautiful mountains. The bird life is very interesting. Excellent places to eat. We had dinner at the Hotel where the hospitality was warm and friendly and the food very tasty especially the lamb The coffee at the bakery is excellent as is their food. There appear to be several festivals and events throughout the year. None when we were there.

Wakkerstroom is a tiny place. Take what you need with you.

Wakkerstroom is a tiny place. Take what you need with you. Thyme Out restaurant served excellent food. Birding is excellent, and I recommend hiring a guide. Without our guide Lucky, we would not have seen most of the endemics.

Wakkerstroom has a natural beauty and tranquil atmosphere. The place is steeped in history. Every single person we met was friendly and prepared to save us some of his/her time to answer questions or give directions or advice. I suppose this is life as it should be.

Quiet Village when we visited on a Tuesday.

Quiet Village when we visited on a Tuesday. Apparently the locals weekend is Mondays and Tuesdays and the Village experience more visitors over weekends. We had lunch at their Historical Hotel who had a menu that caters for everyone. We had outstanding Lamb Curry and tasteful thin base Pizza. Their big wetlands at the bottom of the town had a lot of birdlife which must be explored over a few days.

Wakkerstroom is a well-known town, most especially for Birding, on the border of the Mpumalanga and Kwazulu-Natal provinces. I highly recommend booking one of the excellent birding guides that the town has to offer, if you are going birding. There are a few restaurants around the small town, and I had good experiences at the ones I tried (Red Rooster and Country Inn). The entire town is basically along a 3km or so long main strip of road. The side roads are all dirt roads, so I recommend a vehicle with high clearance, if not a 4x4. There is a single petrol station (Total) in the whole town along the main road, and I did not see Diesel fuel being sold there. Volksrust (23km away) has more options for fuel, as well as a SuperSPAR if need be. Take a jacket along, as the weather can change anytime, especially between morning and evening.
