The town has a history of an artist's retreat, with a museum and Malhoa, the most famous artist's, residence. It has historic medieval buildings in a cobblestreet old town center. There is a large Saturday market with a lot of variety. The hilly countryside is gorgeous and features Sao Simao River Beach for swimming and hiking. A really pleasant village tucked away in the countryside, slightly off the beaten track-which suited us fine. I stayed in the historical center of town and it was excellent. The hotel was excellent. I felt safe. There were restaurants, coffee shops, laundry and shopping all within walking distance. There is an Intermarche in town . Also the bus station was walking distance I was able to take to Lisbon and then connect down to the Algarve. I met with a realtor and looked at 4 properties outside of town. I definitely could see myself living in Figueiro dos Vinhos. If nothing else it's worth a visit to central Portugal. We stayed as a family of four in the cottage.
We stayed as a family of four in the cottage. When we booked, we were fully aware that the property is ideal for 2 as the sofa bed is small. However the natural beauty of the surroundings was absolutely breathtaking and magical. Our two daughters of 21 and 18 were in absolute awe of the place! The rustic cottage was beautifully renovated and clean and we were delighted! I strongly recommend renting this property if you want to experience a magical stay swimming in your private natural pond in the morning, eating as you watch the river flow 10 meters away and falling asleep to the rustling of leaves and the flowing waters of Praga SAO SIMAO.
