Not a lot to do in Stanhope. Pretty quiet.

Not a lot to do in Stanhope. Pretty quiet. A few pubs and shops. If you have a car, you can travel around to other more interesting places. We visited Durham, which was lovely. We did the boat trip there and it was very interesting and good value. Roots of India takeaway in Stanhope was very nice. Buon Appetito in Wolsingham was lovely.

Lovely area, river running through with excellent path either side . Weardale railway place of interest. Plenty of local independent shops. Gorgeous views of the hills , plenty of footpaths to walk around the area.

Centre of Upper Weardale, a town with character in the shadow of old limestone quarries, lead mining and continuing sheep farming. Well placed for Barnard Castle and Teesdale, Durham City and not far from the Yorkshire Dales and Cumbria's Lake District. Walk from St John's Chapel to Wearhead by the river then back on the valley high road to the north parallel to the river. Or investigate Slits Wood a beautiful river walk past waterfalls to an old lead mining site. Cranesbill in May, holly and hawthorn berries in the winter.
