FAQs about hotels in Marseille

A City Built from the Sea

Founded by the Phocaeans in 600 B.C., the long history of Marseille has produced an interesting and dynamic port-side city bursting with cultural diversity. Watch the fishermen sell their catch by auction at Vieux Harbour or cruise along the Corniche roads with views of the Calanques, dramatic rocky inlets to the sea.

The le Cours Julien and la Plaine areas provide a trendy hangout and every Thursday and Saturday morning the Plaine market offers its various wares. This is the area to buy a novel from a hip bookshop or watch your kids in one of the playgrounds. There are also plentiful cafes to sip a cappuccino and watch the world go by.

If a culture packed vacation is on the agenda, the Musée d'Archéologie Méditerranéenne, Notre Dame de la Garde and Palais Longchamp won’t disappoint. The unique Unité d'Habitation, designed by famous architect Le Corbusier, contains everything from a shopping street to housing and has spectacular views of the terracotta landscape that makes Marseille so distinctive.

Marseille is a short trip from Marseille Provence Airport, so your holiday can start promptly. With over 100 hotels and apartments available, Booking.com is the perfect place find the great accommodation and start your journey in the largest city on the Côte d'Azur.

Notre Dame Cathedral on top of a hill is a must see.

Notre Dame Cathedral on top of a hill is a must see. There’s a public bus 60 on which you can pay the fare with a contactless credit card. The view from the top reminded me of the view in my home city of San Francisco overlooking Alcatraz island. It is just as beautiful. Beaches are lovely and lots of restaurants. Very vibrant vieux port and La Panier.

We stayed at La Terrasse du Pecheur in the Vallon des Auffes area. Can only recommend. Easy to get the bus to Vieux Port. Took the Colorbus to get around the city and its major attractions, such as Notre-Dame de la Garde Basilica. Fantastic views!. Cathedrale la Major also a must-see and the Mucem museum/area. Wish we could have stayed longer... Had excellent dinner just steps away from our apartment, at Avant Court. Famous bouillabaisse restaurants are also in the same area.

It is a very exciting, vibrant city, and the cosmopolitan nature of the people who live and work there is particularly rich and diverse. There is so much to do, to see, to value and appreciate - a great European city to which we will definitely return!

    I really loved Marseille.

I really loved Marseille. I was travelling alone and had been warned that it was dangerous, but I moved around quite freely in well-frequented areas, at night, too, and never felt uneasy. There are, of course, people sleeping rough, but you get that in any big city. I only had a weekend, so didn't manage all the sights and museums but I can recommend the following: Go to the Vieux Port on a Saturday morning for the fish and flower market around and under the Ombrière, an amazing mirrored pavilion by Norman Foster. Catch the bus up to Notre Dame de la Garde for the church and a great view of the city. Don't try to walk up. It's further than it looks and very steep. Back at sea level, splurge 50 cents on the little ferry to cross the water to Le Panier. Wander around this ancient area, taking in the Vielle Charité - great free exhibition. Don't miss Rue Beauregard with its graffiti and pot plants. On another day walk along to Fort St Jean for more sea views and, an absolute must, the Cosquer cave experience, a completely un-kitschy replica of the palaeolithic underwater cave, now inaccessible, with many ancient drawings. You chug round in little self-driving cars with headphones providing an excellent guided tour in a selection of languages. It was a highlight. A weekend was a bit short. I would have liked to visit the islands off the coast. I think 4 days would be ideal.

The city has two polar opposites, the touristy all polished places and the very narrow dirty little streets. I only got to see this because we arrived in the city with a car very late at nigh (early in the morning) 3:30am, and we missed a turn to get to our hotel so the navigation took us into different one way alleys and it was surprisingly lively and busy (not in a good way) at that time of the night. Otherwise on the typical tourist attractions everything seems normal, you see diversity of people, a lot of options for food and good atmosphere. We even witnessed a protest going on and still felt safe.

The city is about 2600 years old.

The city is about 2600 years old. Greeks first settled in Marseille. Now this is a huge city with amazing people, beautiful French language, Friouli islands near Marseille. You can get there by ferry ship. Additionally there are beautiful churches, beautiful architecture, the pine trees smell so good. Take the trip to the Calanques National Park by ferry and you will see white cliffs and blue waters. Enjoy ice-cream in the city. Buy Marseille soup for your house.

Excellent location close to both the Port and the main shopping area. The Vieux Port Metro station is right outside the hotel. Our room was absolutely lovely - quiet and spacious, with a beautiful bathroom and the fridge and tea making facilities were most welcome. Breakfast in Reception downstairs was great with a nice selection of fruit, yoghurt, hot food and fresh warm croissants from a local bakery. Very impressed.

Staff friendly and very helpful. Located in front of sain-charles station and the bus from airport stops on the back of sain-charles, which is very usefull. There is a metro station in front of hotel too. The room was clean. Quiet hotel, didn't heard noises from the street. From my room I could see the vieux port in the background, who is not far away. Comfortable bed. Air conditioning in the room.

The best thing in this hotel is location. It's 150m from Vieux Port, it's restaurants and bars. The building is old (as anything around it). The people running the place were helpful and nice to talk. In order to learn about Marseille or french way of life. The breakfast was a quality one in size and taste, compared to ones we wanted to experience also in Vieux Port cafes.

Great stay at the Appartements du Vieux Port as a couple with a baby. Really nice and clean flat walking distance from most spots in Marseille and steps away from the metro and the Vieux-Port. Perfect set up with a young baby, combining the benefits of both hotel and flat. Super helpful staff, always available (during working hours) - made the stay even easier !
