FAQs about hotels in Canberra

Culture, Politics and Military Mix

A popular quiz question is: what’s the capital of Australia? If you answered Sydney or Melbourne then it’s time to discover the real answer – Canberra. With Parliament House at its core, Canberra fans out across both sides of Lake Burley Griffin to reveal a diverse mix of museums, restaurants and bars filled with curious tourists, political persons and public servants.

Canberra was created as a solution to Australia’s 2 largest cities squabbling over the right to become the national capital. The Limestone Plains region in New South Wales was chosen as the site for present day Canberra. It was a good choice for nature lovers as it is surrounded by bushland, mountain ranges and, more recently, wineries.

The National Gallery, National Museum and National Library of Australia highlight Canberra’s cultural riches. Other notable institutions to visit are the High Court of Australia and the National Film and Sound Archive that stockpiles a collection of Australia’s early radio, television and film history.

The military also plays a significant role here with many training facilities for the army such as the Australian Defence Force Academy. An unforgettable experience is attending the Anzac Day Dawn service at The Australian War Memorial.

Australia’s cultural capital with a political punch has many hotels, motels and apartments on Booking.com for that city trip, business jaunt or family holiday.

Canberra has so much to see & do.

Canberra has so much to see & do. The majority of the tourists attractions are free. Down load a map of Canberra to see those places of interest like the War Memorial, Old Parliament House, Royal Australian Mint and the Zoo only to name a few. If you get the opportunity to visit Floriade, it's a must. I know it closes early October 2025. The Light Rail is convenient and easily assessable from Northbourne Ave. Tickets available at light rail stations from ticket machines. Street signs are clearly visible with easy to follow direction to suburbs or tourist attractions. Great walking & cycle tracks throughout the city. Loads of cafes, restaurants, bars, clubs, pubs and shops and shopping centres. Loved our recent visit to Canberra, cannot wait to come back.

There are so many things to do here, it's an amazing place!

There are so many things to do here, it's an amazing place! Don't miss, Old Parliament House, New Parliament House, absolute MUST SEE, the ANZAC War Museum, which has just been renovated. I go every time I go to Canberra. I've been told that the zoo/accommodation place is really worth a visit, if only for a one off. Do the museum in town, do the cruise on Lake Burley Griffin and hear the Carillion and see the city from the water, which is always a different perspective. Try and get there for Floriade, it's amazing. Just wander through town and see all the sculptures, which abound. If you have any interest in art the National Gallery and Picture Gallery are virtually next door to one another, and there's hours of entertainment and visual pleasure to be experienced there, plus some very good food! The exhibitions are quite diverse and can be extraordinary, especially when they have a travelling exhibition from overseas, like the one I just saw from the Museum Berggruen in Germany that explored the art created by Cezanne, who changed the world of painting with his extraordinary concepts and who influenced a myriad of future and contemporary painters and artisans, both male and female, combined with and showing how extensive his influence was by showing art from other countries including Australia. Finishing with the extraordinary and exquisite sculptures of Giacometti, which was a fitting end to a very satisfying exhibition.

There is always plenty to do and not enough time.

There is always plenty to do and not enough time. The National Library has regular displays and a good cafe. Currently a 1975 exhibit is worthwhile for a visit. The Botanical Gardens are very special and offer nice walking as does the Arboretum. Both have cafes. ON Sundays parking seems to be free at many galleries the Library and other significant places. Old Parliament House, now the Museum of Democracy is a favourite place of ours. School age children especially love Questacon which is a wonderful asset for them to visit.

Loved Floriade flower festival first week of trip.

Loved Floriade flower festival first week of trip. Absolutely beautiful. Great activities also, music and food stalls. Highly recommend Canberra in Spring with all the beautiful blossoms around the lake. Also loved the Tulip Farm. Sad Telstra Tower was closed due to renno's as was married there in the year 2000. Went to the War Memorial, Mint, Parliament House, Art Gallery, Museum, Questacon and climbed Mt Ainslie which was a decent hike up n back with great views. Watched the sunrise from Red Hill. Wish we'd done the ballooning!

    What a vibrant city.

What a vibrant city. Lots of commerce, shops and restaurants/cafes. The food was amazing with a vast selection of cuisines. A good selection of hustle bustle in the main shopping areas, along with slower paced ambles through fringe shops and parks. Plenty of parking areas with the Convention Centre being 24/7 and well priced. 5 days would allow the time to see all the city sights, then add a few more to see places like Parliament House, War Memorial, Botanical Gardens, etc.

Excellent location five minutes' walk to Civic (CBD), with cafes and restaurants nearby. Easy parking in basement (there's a fee for parking but that is pretty common in central Canberra). Spacious, clean room. Upper floors away from Northbourne Avenue have the quietest rooms. It's not the cheapest hotel in town but it's the one we keep returning to.
